Mass Timber Construction

Gaia, Singapore (2023)

What is it

Mass timber construction refers to the use of large solid wood panels, engineered wood products, or composite wood systems for the primary structural system of a building. This includes cross-laminated timber (CLT), glued laminated timber (glulam), and laminated veneer lumber (LVL), among others. These materials are used to construct walls, floors, and roofs, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional building materials like concrete and steel.

Carbon Sequestration

Wood is a renewable resource that naturally stores carbon absorbed from the atmosphere during the growth of the tree. When sustainably harvested and used in construction, the carbon remains stored within the mass timber products, effectively sequestering carbon and helping to mitigate climate change.

Reduced Carbon Emissions

Mass timber construction typically requires less energy to produce compared to traditional building materials like concrete and steel. As a result, the overall carbon footprint of a mass timber building can be considerably lower, contributing to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Energy Efficiency

Mass timber construction often allows for faster assembly and construction, which can reduce energy use and associated emissions during construction. Additionally, wood has natural insulating properties, potentially improving the energy efficiency of the building over its lifetime.

Sustainable Forest Management

Mass timber components can be prefabricated off-site, leading to less construction waste and minimizing the environmental impact of construction activities.

The use of mass timber can incentivize sustainable forest management practices. When forests are managed responsibly, they can serve as a long-term, reliable source of raw material for mass timber products, supporting biodiversity, soil health, and water quality.

Waste Reduction

Mass timber components can be prefabricated off-site, leading to less construction waste and minimizing the environmental impact of construction activities.
